Below is some in-depth information every Alanis Morissette fan should know.
It is presented in the form of Question & Answer.
Did Alanis released any albums before the release of Jagged Little Pill?
Yes, In 1986, at the age of 10, with the money from You Can't Do That on Television she recorded
and released her debut single "Fate Stay With Me." At age 15 she was in a cover-band called the"New
York Fries." She released her debut album entitled "Alanis" in April of 1991. In October of 1992,
she released her 2nd album "Now is the Time" and made a cameo appearance in "Just One of the
Girls." "Fate Stay With Me," "Alanis" and "Now is the Time" were released exclusivly to Canada
which is why many consider "Jagged Little Pill" her debut album.
I've heard her earlier work; why are her previous records so poppy then in 1995 out came this
"alternative" album?
Alanis released those albums with the motivation to win awards and get recognition; not soley for
her own sake. "I think on the first records that I did when I was younger, some of it was truthful.
Some were pretty close to how I felt, but I don't think I was old enough consciously or emotionaly
to be able to actually share everything that was my hishest truth." This left Alanis feeling
unstatisifed with her work or herself. In 1994 she moved to Los Angeles to find a collaberator that
she could connect with and write songs that were 100% what Alanis was feeling. In Los Angles she me
Glen Ballard. After about 15 minutes of talking they begin to write and there was an instant
connection. With the help of Glen Ballard she tapped into a part of herself she never had before.
She now could write songs about alll her subconcious thoughts and as she says "the songs write
themselves." On June 13, 1995, "Jagged Little Pill" was released. "It's all about honesty," says
Alanis, "It's about writing songs that are snapshots of how I feel and who I am, because if they
are not real, it's impossible to sing them with conviction."
"Supposed Former Infatustion Junkie" is not like Jagged Little Pill. Why?
Alanis took a year and half off from everything but her fmaily and friends. During that break she
took a soul searching trip to India with her mother and few friends. Also, Alanis released Jagged
Little Pill in 1995 and Junkie was released in 1998, in the four years since Jagged Little Pill's
release Alanis changed and grew a lot. Alanis wrote all but Can't Not duting the summer of '98 so
each song on the album refelcts her change and growth.
